Company Grit - V.1
When the going gets tough, the grit begins to show.
My favorite definition of grit comes from Angela Duckworth. She describes it as a balance between two ingredients: passion and perseverance.
Passion is an all-consuming flame that needs to be fed, while perseverance is a dogged determination to keep moving forward no matter what. These two traits aren’t always a natural fit, which is why there isn't much of this grit stuff out there on a personal level, and even more so when it comes to Company Grit.
For me, Company Grit is about staying the course, even when the course changes, without losing your true north. It's about doing all that while keeping stamina and energy levels high and doing it all for years on end.
When you compare startups that make it with those that don’t, grit is usually the difference. But how do you build a gritty company? That's the million-dollar question. Not surprisingly, the key is in your ability to develop gritty culture.
If you want to instill values, you must exaggerate at the outset, so something is left by the time it gets watered down by life's constant stream of events. Take passion to the extreme, and you get its less noble yet much more effective cousin - obsession. Obsession, as opposed to passion, is also a great companion to perseverance; the two naturally feed off each other and obsessed companies that never let go grow to be gritty companies.
And if you don’t have an obsession, obsessing over Company Grit may be an excellent place to start.
