We tend to look down on the crowds in the colosseum in ancient Rome, cheering their favorite gladiators butchering each other to death, then pick up the remote and bing on Squid games. Not even realizing Squid games are the quintessential gladiator to the death contest of the 21 century, and it's a blockbuster!
Squid game depicts a to the death spectator sports event. It is precisely the kind that makes our juices flow with the added benefit of knowing it's "only a movie" and people don't really die. A fact that serves to south our conscience and declares us not only bloodthirsty, just as the ancient Romans were but hypocrites as well.
Just make sure you don't let the children watch it; they have not yet developed the self-delusional mechanism that goes along with knowing this is what excites us, but actually, no one really died... so it's ok.
I think I like the Romans better.
